Dr Thomas McLoughlin has been a senior GMO inspector with the EPA since 1995. He has a degree in Agricultural Science from UCD and a PhD in Microbiology from NUIG. He worked in the USA for over 12 years with different Agricultural biotechnology companies working in the field of microbial ecology and genetics. He has several scientific publications and a number of patents in this scientific area. In his current role with the EPA, Dr McLoughlin has responsibility for the implementation of the GMO Regulations pertaining to the contained use, the deliberate release into the environment of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and for matters relating to the UN Cartagena Protocol on biosafety. Dr McLoughlin represents the EPA on the FSAI GM Advisory Network and at EU level he represents Ireland on the EFSA Network for GMO Risk Assessment and at EU Competent Authorities meetings dealing with GMO issues.
