Medical and Scientific Director, Irish Blood Transfusion Service
Since November 1996 I have been Medical & Scientific Director of the Irish Blood Transfusion Service, responsible for medical, scientific and technical matters within the transfusion service. I trained in haematology in Edinburgh and at McMaster University, Canada. Current research is directed towards haemoglobin level regulation in health and in the efficacy of red cell transfusions. I also work on production of clinical grade red cells from progenitor cells as a PI on a Wellcome-funded programme, in collaboration with the Universities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Bristol, Loughborough and Cambridge, and with the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service and the English Blood Transfusion Service. In addition the IBTS has a programme of ex vivo limbal epithelial cell culture aimed at providing clinical grade material in the near future.
